Electric Scooter Accessories: Locks, Mounts, Lights and Carrying Solutions

Every scooter owner buys the wrong accessory at least once. The phone mount that clamps nothing because the grip diameter is 31.8 mm and the mount expects 22.2 mm. The folding lock that slides off a stem with no anchor point. The bright headlight that blinds oncoming cyclists because it has no beam cutoff. This guide prevents those purchases. It names the problem the accessory solves, tells you what to look for when buying one, and spells out any legal requirement that applies. The sections that follow are organised by what you are trying to do: secure the scooter, navigate, carry it, be seen. The most common mistake is buying a bar-mounted item that does not fit your scooter's clamp diameter. The three diameters you will encounter across the models in our dossier are 22.2 mm (standard bicycle grip size, found on Xiaomi Mi M365, Niu KQi3 Max, Gotrax G4), 25.4 mm (Ninebot Max G30, Unagi Model One Voyager, Fluid Freeride Horizon), and 31.8 mm (Kaabo Wolf King GT, Dualtron Thunder 3, Vsett 10+). Theft is the single biggest financial risk of owning an electric scooter. Unlike a bicycle, a scooter has no quick-release wheels to leave behind, and its folded shape fits into a car boot in seconds. A cable lock is not enough. A chain lock is heavy but effective. The two lock types that match the threat are the D-lock (U-lock) and the folding lock.

D-Lock (U-Lock)

A D-lock passes through the scooter's frame, around a fixed object, and back into itself. The lock body should be hardened steel with a double-locking shackle. Sold Secure Gold-rated D-locks resist angle-grinder attacks for about 30 seconds. That is enough to deter most thieves in public. The problem is reach: many scooter decks are too short or too wide for a standard bicycle D-lock to fit around both the frame and a bike rack. Look for a compact D-lock with a shackle length of at least 100 mm and a width that clears the deck. The lock mounts to the stem or deck via a bracket that must match your scooter's geometry; test-fit before you buy.

Folding Lock

A folding lock is a series of hardened steel links that hinge into a rigid circle. It packs flatter than a D-lock and adapts to irregular objects like railings or signposts. The weakness is the hinge pins, which can be shimmed or cut with bolt cutters on lower-rated models. Buy a folding lock with a Sold Secure Gold rating and a link thickness of at least 5 mm. Mounting one on a scooter stem works only if the stem has a flat section long enough to clamp the bracket. The Xiaomi M365 stem is too short for some folding lock brackets. The Ninebot Max G30 stem accommodates most.

Lock Mounting Positions

Locks mount to the stem, the deck, or the bar. Stem mounting is the most stable but demands a bracket that fits the stem's diameter and shape. Deck mounting uses adhesive or screw-down brackets that may interfere with the folding mechanism. Bar mounting is common on folding locks but adds weight to the steering axis and can rattle loose. The best position is the one that does not obstruct the folding latch or the throttle.

A phone mount turns your scooter into a navigation device. The mount must survive vibration, rain, and the occasional drop. The first specification to check is the clamp diameter, as listed above. The second is vibration damping: a rigid mount transmits every road imperfection to your phone's camera stabiliser, which can permanently damage the optical image stabilisation on some phones. A mount with a silicone or rubber dampener costs more. It protects a phone that costs much more.

Clamp-On vs Stem-Mounted

Clamp-on mounts attach to the bar and are the most secure. Stem-mounted versions use a silicone strap or adhesive pad that wraps around the stem; they work on telescopic stems where a clamp cannot grip, but they slide down under the weight of a large phone. For a stem-mounted mount, choose one with a positive locking mechanism, not just friction tape. Deck-mounted mounts with a silicone strap exist for carrying the phone flat on the deck, but you cannot read a map there while riding.

Display Visibility in Sunlight

Your phone screen competes with direct sunlight. A mount that positions the phone vertically, tilted toward your face, improves readability. A matte screen protector reduces glare. Some riders add a small sunshade that clips to the mount; these are effective but add wind resistance. The scooter's own display, LED bar, monochrome LCD, or color TFT, is readable in sunlight only if it has a high-brightness panel. The Niu KQi3 Max's display is among the best in its class. The Xiaomi M365's original display washes out entirely in direct sun.

Safety gear is not optional. It is the difference between a bruise and a fracture. The gear divides into three categories: what protects your head, what makes you visible, and what keeps you in control.

Helmet Standards: EN 1078, NTA-8776, and CPSC

The helmet you buy must meet a standard your jurisdiction enforces. The EU helmet standard for e-scooter riders is EN 1078, which covers bicycle, skateboard, and roller skate helmets. France requires a helmet for riders outside urban areas and for all minors everywhere (Décret n° 2019-1082, amended 2023). Spain mandates helmets in all areas under DGT regulations effective March 2022. Germany has no legal obligation (Elektrokleinstfahrzeuge-Verordnung, eKFV, as amended 2024). Australia requires helmets in all states where e-scooters are legal. Japan made helmets mandatory for all riders of specified small motorized bicycles under the revised Road Traffic Act effective July 2023. In the US, the CPSC standard 16 CFR Part 1203 applies; California requires helmets for riders under 18 (CVC §21235(c)), New York City requires them for riders under 18 (NYC Admin Code §19-176.2). For higher-speed scooters (above 25 km/h), consider a helmet rated to NTA-8776, the standard for e-bike and e-scooter riders in the Netherlands, referenced by some US state laws. A bicycle helmet does not protect your chin or face. A full-face helmet does.

Lights: EN 17128 Standard and Beam Pattern

EN 17128:2020 requires a front white headlamp, a rear red tail lamp, a red rear reflector, and yellow or white side reflectors or reflective strips. The German eKFV requires the same plus yellow side reflectors. Many scooters ship with lights that meet the standard but are too dim to illuminate the road at speed. An aftermarket headlight should have a beam cutoff, a sharp horizontal line that prevents blinding oncoming traffic, and a brightness of at least 200 lumens for urban riding and 500 lumens for unlit paths. Mount the light on the bar or stem, not on the deck. A rear light with a flashing mode and a wide viewing angle is more visible than a steady red dot. Reflective ankle bands are cheap, effective, and attach to your trousers or jacket; they move with your legs, which catches a driver's peripheral vision better than a static reflector.

Thumb Throttle Ergonomics

The factory thumb throttle on most scooters works but fatigues your thumb on rides longer than 15 minutes. An aftermarket trigger throttle or a thumb throttle with a contoured paddle reduces finger strain. The throttle must match the scooter's controller voltage and connector type; the Xiaomi M365 and Ninebot Max G30 have different connector pinouts. A throttle upgrade is a comfort accessory, not a safety item, but a numb thumb is a safety hazard.

Carrying a scooter is the part of ownership that nobody tests in a showroom. A 23 kg scooter is manageable for 30 seconds. A 35 kg Kaabo Wolf King GT is a two-person lift up stairs. Carrying accessories make the difference between a scooter you use and a scooter you leave at home.

Stem Hook Load Limit

A stem hook attaches to the folding joint or the stem collar and lets you hang the scooter from a desk, a shelf, or a train luggage rack. The load limit of a stem hook is rarely stated by the manufacturer. The hook must be rated for at least the scooter's actual mass, not the claimed mass, which is routinely 0.5-2.0 kg lower. A steel hook with a rubber-lined grip and a locking latch is safer than a plastic hook with an open J shape. The folding hook on the rear fender of many scooters is not a carrying point; using it as one is the most common cause of folding hook fatigue failure.

Deck Anchor Point

Some scooters have a threaded insert on the underside of the deck that accepts a screw-in handle or strap. The Ninebot Max G30 has a threaded hole under the rear fender that some aftermarket handles use. The Xiaomi M365 has no deck anchor point; aftermarket brackets clamp to the stem instead. A deck anchor point with a load rating of at least 50 kg is sufficient for carrying the scooter by the handle. If your scooter lacks one, a bar-mounted strap that wraps around the stem and grips is the next best option, but it stresses the stem folding mechanism.

Folded Dimensions and Actual Weighed Mass

Manufacturer folded dimensions often exclude protruding grips, brake levers, or the folded stem latch. The scooter may not fit a stated storage space by 3-8 cm in one dimension. Measure the space you intend to store the scooter in before you buy a carrying accessory. The actual weighed mass of the scooter, not the claimed mass, determines whether a carrying strap or handle is adequate. The Ninebot Max G30LP has a claimed mass of 17.2 kg and an independent weighed mass of 18.1 kg; the difference matters when you are lifting it onto a train rack.

A scooter lock phone mount is not a single product. It is two products, a lock and a phone mount, that share the same bar real estate. The conflict is physical: a D-lock bracket and a phone mount clamp may not both fit on a 22.2 mm bar. The solution is to mount the lock on the stem and the phone on the bar, or to use a folding lock that mounts on the stem and leaves the bar free. If your scooter has a 25.4 mm or 31.8 mm bar, a clamp-on phone mount and a separate stem-mounted lock bracket coexist without interference. For 22.2 mm bars, a stem-mounted phone mount and a bar-mounted lock bracket are the reverse arrangement. Measure the available clamp space before you buy either.
