It handily outperforms its predecessor thanks to a dual braking system and an upgraded LG battery. The range is restricted to around 15 miles, and the design may not be to everyone’s taste, but for a cheap e-scooter, it’s a terrific bargain.

Gotrax XR Ultra Summary

The Gotrax XR Ultra is a good option if you want a cheap electric scooter that will get you where you need to go without breaking the bank. The agile e-scooter does quite well, due to its simple design and powerful single 300-watt engine that makes quick work of acceleration and a respectable effort when climbing hills.

Its improved LG battery and innovative dual braking system make it a clear upgrade over its predecessor. Although the 15-mile range and unique design may not appeal to everyone, this e-scooter is a steal for the price.

Considering all of these factors, it’s up to you to decide on a scooter. Let’s skip the small talk and go into the specifics of the Gotrax XR Ultra right now. Continue reading.

GOTRAX XR ULTRA REVIEW3

Performance Overview

The declared peak speed of the Gotrax XR Ultra electric scooter is 15.5mph, which is more than enough power for normal riding. Riders have corroborated this assertion in performance testing, albeit the accuracy of the claim is very context dependent. In fact, we were able to reach a brisk 20 miles per hour while coasting downhill, so the acceleration seemed extremely genuine.

The XR Ultra does well on inclines, and you can take it up to 15 degrees without too much trouble. Gentle inclines won’t be an issue because of the increased torque provided by the front-wheel engine compared to e-scooters with rear-wheel motors.

There is a noticeable slowdown at the more extreme end, and you may need to give a few kicks to get to your goal, but this is to be expected with single-motor, low-cost e-scooters.

Top Speed & Acceleration

The Gotrax XR Ultra performs well in acceleration, and its peak speed can be reached in an average of 10 seconds, making it competitive with other high-end scooters.

Smartly, Gotrax paired a 300-watt motor with a Li-ion battery made by LG. You won’t need anything faster unless you consistently do the sharpest incline climbs or anticipate white-knuckle rides, but working together, you’ll be able to set and sustain respectable speeds throughout your journey.

Battery Life & Range

Although the Gotrax XR Ultra claims to have a range of 16 miles, we only managed to get around half that in our testing. We estimated a range of around 12 miles, however this is highly dependant on factors such as rider weight, terrain, pace, and weather. The XR Ultra is not the right choice if you need an electric scooter that can keep up with your 20-mile commute at maximum power and speed.

The Gotrax XR Ultra is a top performance among cheap e-scooters and a good choice if you often travel on flat roads and want to save time on shorter trips. With a premium brand battery like LG, you can anticipate a respectable battery life, and when you mix that with the lightning-fast charging time of 3.5 to 4 hours, it’s doubtful that you’ll be disappointed.

Motor Configuration

The Gotrax XR Ultra electric scooter’s 300w front-wheel motor is a welcome feature. Even though we’ve previously established that the XR Ultra’s superior performance and efficiency are due in large part to the motor’s strategic location, we’ll reiterate that point.

Limitations in e-scooter management are a common result of this setup. However, Gotrax has countered the scooter’s instability by installing extra-wide handlebars, which largely eliminate this issue.

Construction & Build Quality

Matte aluminum, which Gotrax used in the construction of the XR Ultra, is credited for helping to keep the bike light and is often regarded as superior to alloy construction.

There are certain individuals who will either love or hate the electric scooter’s overall design. It’s either something you adore or despise. The scooter’s tiny cockpit, available in a variety of stylish colors, and matte finish are just a few of its many appealing features.

However, there are a few flashy touches, such as the massive ‘GOTRAX’ label running down the stem’s side, the red accents on the levers and other parts of the build, and the most obvious of all, the exposed brake wire. Because most electric scooters protect the brake line by routing it within the scooter’s chassis, this design decision is puzzling. Leaving the cable exposed increases the likelihood that it may be damaged and need repair or replacement. When the scooter is folded up, the cord makes it more difficult to transport. It’s not a huge issue, and bikers have probably seen it before, but it seems like a fault in an otherwise well-built product.

The Gotrax XR Ultra has a small but well-designed deck. It is where the brake levers and the throttle push-button are located, and it is positioned comfortably far from the handlebars to prevent any thumb fatigue.

The LED display is minimal, just indicating your speed and an approximate battery life. There is currently no viable option for purchasing an electric scooter that also includes a comprehensive metrics-tracking app. However, you may be certain that the information you are getting from the LED display is both clear and reliable.

There is a single red button in the handlebar stem that operates the scooter’s headlight, switches between first and second gear, and turns it on and off. The Gotrax XR Ultra’s controls are so simple and powerful that even inexperienced riders will quickly feel at home on it.

Suspension

Pneumatic (airless) tyres do most of the actual work to absorb impact, while the Gotrax XR Ultra lacks any extra suspension. Since the battery is located in the stem rather than the deck, the latter is more flexible and may help absorb shock, all of which contribute to a more comfortable ride.

Please note that this is not an off-road electric scooter, and that the characteristics mentioned above operate well on urban roads and moderate terrain. The tires are sturdy enough to withstand a few bumps and the occasional drop down a curb, but you’ll have a hard time getting the Gotrax XR Ultra to function well in situations like gravel and mud.

Ride Quality

The Gotrax XR Ultra provides a very comfortable ride. The huge 8.5-inch tires aid in the scooter’s glide, and the vehicle’s quick steering makes for simple handling. The inclination strategy was simple for us, too, and we had a blast using it.

In addition, cruise control is a convenient extra. While we found that locking in your pace was helpful for longer drives, it was less so if you had to stop often for traffic lights.

For a few seconds after you give the scooter a good kick, the engine will begin to provide acceleration. This is the norm for scooters in this price range, and some people find it more comfortable than a sudden acceleration to 10 mph.

Braking

The Gotrax XR Ultra electric scooter has a reliable dual braking system. Thanks to its mechanical disc brake in the back and electric regenerative front wheel brake, it can stop quickly even while traveling at high speeds.

Scooter brakes are operated by brake levers mounted to the handlebars, which are familiar to cyclists and so simple to use. To make sure both brakes engage, you’ll need to apply firm pressure to the brake lever, but they’re responsive.

GOTRAX XR ULTRA REVIEW4

Portability

Thanks to the mechanism joining the stem and the deck, the Gotrax XR Ultra may be folded up for convenient storage. Some riders were not lovers of the original Gotrax XR because of its controversial safety pin mechanism, which was designed to prevent the electric scooter from folding while riding.

In their latest model update, Gotrax did away with this mechanism in favor of a red plastic tab on the back fender that secures the stem when it is folded. You may not like that the XR Ultra’s handlebars don’t collapse, but their absence helps the stroller collapse quickly.

The collapsed frame weighs less than ten pounds, making it easy to transport up a flight of stairs or into the trunk of a vehicle. The scooter is foldable to a manageable size (43.3 x 17.1 x 14.6), making it easy to store away in a closet or carry on an elevator.

Water Resistance

The Gotrax XR Ultra is not completely waterproof but may withstand mild rain or damp roads, as shown by its water resistance rating of IP54. You may still go on a ride even if it’s raining or cloudy out, because to the tires’ excellent traction.

Commuters and occasional riders will like this development, since they won’t have to base their whole day’s plans on the forecast, especially because they can easily disassemble their scooters and take them on other modes of transportation if the weather becomes bad.

Lights

Gotrax XR Ultra electric scooter has mediocre illumination. You get a powerful LED headlamp that gives out a respectable amount of light for a scooter of this kind.

However, there is no rear taillight, so you will need to buy extra lights if you want to use the bicycle at night. Ride at night only if you know the area well and can see well.

Tyres

The Gotrax XR Ultra relies on its air-filled (pneumatic) tires for both suspension and mass distribution. The 8.5-inch tyres are larger than average and provide excellent shock absorption, even on smooth pavement.

The electric scooter community is split on whether or not air-filled tires or solid tires are better, with punctures being cited as a common problem with the former. However, the Gotrax XR Ultra’s tyres are said to be more durable and reliable than those of its rivals (the Xiaomi M365 for example).

GOTRAX XR ULTRA REVIEW2

Deck

The Gotrax XR Ultra, as we have said, features a well-designed deck. The grip pad is effective, so you won’t slide even in moderate rain. As a result of its pliability, the deck’s surface is cushiony and forgiving underfoot.

Given that it isn’t responsible for storing the scooter’s battery, the deck may be lower, resulting in a lower center of gravity and a more stable scooter.

Controls & Display

The controls for this powerful electric scooter are ergonomically placed and easily attached to the handlebars.

To the right of the easy-to-read LCD screen is where you’ll find the accelerator. This latter displays information like as the battery’s strength, the length of time the trip will last, the current speed, and more. It also has two switches that let riders toggle between different settings.
